High-speed long-distance ICE trains can be expensive if you wait until the last minute. If you know your plans well in advance, look for the “Sparpreis” options on the Deutsche Bahn website. I bought a ticket for only €20 from Düsseldorf to Munich and planned several months in advance. There are also a number of passes that you can subscribe to to cover group and sightseeing trips.
